Dear Friends of Selected Works -
''As full of spirit as the month of May, and as gorgeous as the sun in Midsummer,' said Shakespeare. And does that not describe this month's events at Open Studios here at the Fine Arts Building this coming Friday, May 11th? Yes, lilacs perfume the air, violets peek shyly inside new grass, and, as I saw this morning at Botany Pond at the U of Chicago, baby ducks are paddling frantically through the waterlilies to keep pace with their drab looking mother Mallard. It's Spring and all, and time to come out and dive into life in all its creative and unexpected variations. Open Studios is what I'm talking about. A full list of this month's events is posted below.
There is yoga on the 5th floor, as well as hand crafted jewelry, and on the 3rd floor, the irrepressible Dr. Ayubi has a new show of her abstract paintings. On 6, Jennifer Cronin is showing some of her new striking figurative work, and on 8, Anita Miller has new work too. Much else - see below...
Here at the bookstore, books and music have been going out at a steady pace, thanks to the arrival of the Tim Fisher collection, and other additions from booksales and house-calls. There are plenty of new arrivals to sort through. We will be holding forth in our usual ad-hoc symposium on whatever subject seems ripe for raucous critical analysis, and good music and snacks will be provided. Hodge the cat promises to supervise whenever not running out in the hallway or otherwise acting crazy.
Later this month, I need to regretfully announce, the Fine Arts Building, and therefore the bookstore, will be closed on May 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st because of the NATO conference, and the security concerns that the demonstrators present. I would prefer to remain open but it is not my decision to make. It certainly is going to make this month a trial in more ways than one - I make most of my sales during the weekend, and this wipes one totally out. Life in the big city. Please feel free to come in and spend wildly to help make up for this disruption.
The Fine Arts Building is located at 410 S. Michigan Ave., between Congress St. and Van Buren. Open Studios is held every 2nd Friday of the month, from 5 PM until 9.
