Dear Friends of Selected Works -

It is July, and for me, it is the sweet center of summer, of, indeed, the entire year - like that middle portion of a watermelon that has no seeds. Because why? Well, because it is my birthday month, of course, and so every July is a mile post for me, always enjoyable because it happens, as I say, during the best part of the year. And so, while I have my own reasons for liking this time of year, there is also the more public monthly celebration we have here at the Fine Arts Building on the 2nd Friday of the month which we call Open Studios.

So - as I have done in the past, anyone wishing me Happy Birthday during Open Studios, between 5pm and 9pm, will receive a 10% discount on any purchase.

Hodge’s book continues to sell and delight people. I had a call this week from a Japanese TV station which was doing a story on businesses with resident animals - they had heard that my store had a cat. I asked if they knew about his book - now they were very interested! So - we’ll see how that goes. A number of friends have asked me ‘Which Japanese TV show/station/network?’ I don’t know - didn’t even ask. If someone wants to come and film in the store I always say ‘yes’. I’ll let you all know if there’s a link to some on-line version of what they do.

The list of all this month’s participants and activities is posted below. Here at the bookstore new arrivals are going out daily. Lots of new material in the music sections too. We will, of course, have our usual beverages and snacks, good music playing, good conversation, and Hodge the cat will be on hand to sign copies of his book and adjudicate all questions of a philosophic nature when he is not escaping out into the hallway.

And remember - anyone wishing me 'Happy Birthday' will get 10% off on whatever they are buying. So, please come - this is the time of year to get out and enjoy!

Open Studios is held every second Friday of the month at the Fine Arts Building, 410 S. Michigan Ave., from 5pm until 9.
